If you’ve browsed Wikipedia for any length of time, you’re certainly familiar by now with the site’s periodic donation drives. In order to cover hosting and bandwidth costs without slathering every page in advertisements, the Wikimedia Foundation asks that its users donate as little as $3 to help the site continue to bring to the world its extensive knowledge of the minutiae of anime plots and lightsaber combat. As the site manages massive amounts of traffic, these drives are fairly frequent now, leading to what very well could be the mating call of the bitcoiner:

“Wikipedia should accept donations in Bitcoin!”

Every time a donation drive starts up, bitcoiners, especially those on reddit, drive themselves into a frenzy, pestering the website’s beleaguered administrative team via email and other messages, hounding them to take Bitcoin instead of things like credit cards or PayPal. This is rebuffed every single time with what has become a form letter:

Thanks for your email and for your interest in supporting free knowledge. Unfortunately we do not accept bitcoin, however, we are aware of bitcoin and we will continue to monitor it with interest. For a full list of other donation options, please visit http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Ways_to_Give/en. Thank you again for your interest!

For anyone who’s worked with the public, especially a segment of the public that is convinced that terrible ideas are in fact good, this is a pretty standard brush-off, meant to fool the recipient into thinking someone cares about their stupid ideas and that they may even be implemented some time in the near future. The reality is that nobody will do anything remotely close to something like “accepting Bitcoin,” “adding the requested feature” to software, or letting your WoW character have every spell in the game. It’s a meaningless message, meant to placate and nothing more.

Regardless, bitcoiners see this as a promise as well as a challenge, and often their subreddit is inundated with posts about Wikipedia as a result. Since they’re so intent on having Wikipedia take their funny money, we looked a little further into the situation.

So far every drive has been successful, and recent donation amounts totaled over $15 million, and according to the Wikimedia Foundation, the average donation was approximately $22. So, if Wikipedia were to directly accept Bitcoin donations, how much more would they stand to earn? As it turns out, not much at all.

In a ridiculously informal and totally unscientific poll, I discovered that the same bitcoiners clamoring for Wikipedia to take their money don’t want to give them much money at all, if anything. Answers ranged from the equivalent of a couple of dollars, with at least two people regurgitating South Park’s “tree fiddy” meme, one stipulating that Wikipedia could have ten entire bitcoins if they “apologize for being wankers about the whole thing,” and many more insisted that Wikipedia no longer deserves their “money” for giving them the cold shoulder for so long. The combined amount from people willing to answer my question comes up to about $23.01. It took six people’s “generosity” to equal that of one average Wikipedian donator. Most of them wouldn’t donate at all; it’s all just grandstanding to proselytize for their cult.

That doesn’t stop them from sounding like a broken record every few months though:

RamirezWikiBitcoin

Some, however, aren’t happy with Wikipedia itself, rather than their choices and ideology.

Wikipedia was probably a CFR/NSA/CIA front from the very beginning.

The whole premise of the site is to mix factual trivia with the many ‘Big Lies’ in falsified history, including major government black ops like the fake 9/11, 7/7, Madrid, Norway, Boston marathon and Sandy Hook terror or serial shooting attacks.

Wikipedia is clearly aligned with the global fascist government drive. It appeared out of nowhere with massive bandwidth and server resources, with no adequate explanation of how it secured these. It continues to report fully debunked and discredited falsified events as real, to aid the UN plans for gun control, free trade open borders, international socialism on steroids, the attack on Christianity, attack on the family etc.

I understand that only reference links from the likes of the BBC, Reuters, AP and CNN are permissable on Wikipedia now. In other words, Wikipedia is nothing more than an echo chamber for the SIX companies that control the global media. Most of the editors are university professors, doctors, economists, civil servants, teachers etc. who are Fabian socialists. The site is a complete joke.

Personally I reckon it’s time for a true anarchist/libertarian version of Wikipedia.

If you really want a terrible anarchic wiki, there’s always Uncyclopedia. I’m not sure they’re too keen on libertarians though.

In case you’re not following closely, pirateat40 (AKA Trendon Shavers) has been formally charged by the SEC, and a judge has given the case a green light. The filed a “show cause” that seized Shavers’ assets before trial, and this is his real, unedited response to this action:

Defendants preliminary response to show cause

The court does not have jurisdiction because it is not within the securities law.

1) freezing Defendants assets;
Its ridiculous for the court to freeze my assets that are required to pay rent, utilities, food, etc and be able to pay for an attorney. My wife does not work and cares for our two children.

2) directing Defendants to provide verified accountings to the Commission;
The court has no authority to order this because it is not within the jurisdiction and does not show a need for it.

3) authorizing expedited discovery concerning the location and extent of Defendantsassets;
Three days is too short and there is no reason for it based on other orders. This should be revised based and agreed to.

Have we mentioned he is appearing pro se in court? This should be amazing.

In his ruling, judge Amos Mazzant made the mistake of saying “It is clear that Bitcoin can be used as money” and bitcoiners have taken this to mean that the US court system, along with the rest of the world governments, have declared Bitcoin to be a real currency that will soon destroy the US Dollar, Euro, various Pesos, and so on. Some have simplified it to the point that they are just shouting “Bitcoin is MONEY” at no one in particular.

What it’s supposed to do is print out a receipt containing two QR codes, the first being the important private key, the second being the public key. We were kindly asked not to photograph people’s private keys as the machine spit them out, since this would be a great way to steal people’s play money.

Once we’d spent enough money on booze and collected a handful of change that wasn’t left on a hotel nightstand, we decided to give this thing a spin just for kicks. Things went downhill almost immediately. Four quarters went in, the display read $0.25, and a penny was found in the coin return slot.

Fortunately, our Bitcoin Heroes were prepared with a sack full of quarters that they kept around “just in case” because this happens sometimes. Once our host had sacrificed seventy-five of his own cents, we received a “paper wallet” that was worth .008 bitcoins. The guy behind us in line was unironically ranting about the instability and worthlessness of the USD. After a quick photo op, we got the hell out of there.

papamoi wants to mine bitcoins, and badly. In March he started asking around for info on some serious butt-mining hardware, looking for ASIC arrays and “super servers” that would feed his need for unbridled wastefulness. BFL wasn’t shipping, Avalon was only sending out orders in batches, and nobody else was producing comparable hardware, and his search had him running in unfulfilling circles until he found Liquid Nitrogen Overclocking.

Our story’s hero pestered the guys at Liquid Nitrogen Overclocking about building a custom mining server, and they responded that they could build him something that provided 1.7 terahashes of bitcoin-mining waste. Of course, he wanted proof, and they gave him the run-around several times, responding with jargon, claims of NDAs, and even appearing to confuse gigahashes with gigahertz. All the while papamoi has been scouring the BitcoinTalk forums for chips, PCB designers, and other high-performance hardware, to no avail.

Our intrepid hero was put off, but then the Liquid Nitrogen Overclocking team said the magic word: “Google.” Apparently Google has been buying “super servers” from Ed Trice in Philadelphia, instead of major, well-known manufacturers such as Dell, HP, or IBM. Lured in by the promise of amazing Google-caliber hardware, papamoi continued, and was surely happy to find that Google was totally cool with the fellows at Liquid Nitrogen selling some pubbie their exclusively designed servers.

This all, of course, was very time-sensitive, because the required components were nearly out of stock. Eager to have his bitcon-spewing monster machines, papamoi sends $47,220.00 via wire transfer to Trice for not one, but two Google Bitcoin miners or whatever they are. Read through the email chain here, then let that sink in for a moment.

$47,220.00

A month later, in what is surely a surprise and not at all the expected result, nothing at all has been shipped and Ed Trice is non-communicative. At this point papamoi turns to the scam/accusations forum and they begin to try to dig up dirt. Poor papamoi confirms his suspicions (after sending someone nearly fifty thousand dollars) here:

EdTriceScamWe then learn that Trice is quite a busy scammer, and is not only ripping off gullible buttcoiners, but the chess community as well, along with other random suckers, and that papamoi was warned by those more sensible than himself that this reeks of scam. Bitcoin superstar Matthew N. Wright shows up and divulges some of Trice’s personal details, which are either incorrect or a stolen identity. After much gnashing of teeth, papamoi is finally convinced to actually contact police instead of relying on internet detectives to find and shame a scam artist into never scamming again.

Things continue to get interesting. People who had done work for or with Trice begin posting, explaining how they too had been ripped off, and how Trice is a shrieking egomaniacal sociopath who’s created personas, threatened various people, lied about virtually every aspect of his “business,” and taken out paid newspaper ads designed to look like legit stories.

We’re not done yet, however. Another user appears at the Bitcoin forums with the unlikely handle ofphilly_cop_41320, and messages papamoi, claiming to be one Randall Smith, a cop in Philadelphia who has taken interest in this ridiculous case. To top it off, a mysterious unnamed businessman is offering a reward of $300,000 for information that leads to Trice’s conviction.

officer_reynoldsOf course there is no “Randall Smith” working for the Philly PD, and shortly after this is confirmed, “The_Authorities” arrives to attempt to slam Bitcoin (you should leave this to the professionals here at Buttcoin,) insult papamoi and other users, and totally act like he’s not Ed Trice.

And that’s the story so far. papamoi is still out $47,220.00. This is unlikely to change.

You may have heard the news by now, but popular Bitcoin payment provider BitInstant was hacked last week. It wasn’t a massive hack like we’ve seen on MyBitcoin or Mt. Gox so I didn’t see much reason to write on it when I saw it 3 days before Wired’s article, but as I looked at it more I figured I’d point out some interesting points.

First, the hack was a regular social engineering hack. Really simple stuff.

Over the weekend the BitInstant team has been hard at work securing our system from a sophisticated attack on Thursday evening. Overall, due to major choke points and redundancies in our system, the hacker wasonly able to walk away with $12,480 USD in BTC, and send them in 3 installments of 333 BTC to bitcoin addresses.

The attacker contacted our domain registrar at Site5 posing as me and using avery similar email address as mine, they did so by proxying through a network owned by a haulage company in the UK whom I suspect are innocent victims the same as ourselves. Armed with knowledge of my place of birth and mother’s maiden name alone (both facts easy to locate on the public record) they convinced Site5 staff to add their email address to the account and make it the primary login (this prevented us from deleting it from the account). We immediately realized what was going on, and logged in to change the information back. After changing this info and locking the attacker out, overnight he was able to revert my changes and point our website somewhere else.

After gaining access, they redirected DNS by pointing the nameservers to hetzner.de in germany, they used hetzner’s nameservers to redirect traffic to a hosting provider in ukraine. By doing this, he locked out both my login and Gareths’s login and they used this to hijack our emails and reset the login for one exchange (VirWox), enabling them to gain access and steal $12,480 USD worth of BTC.

BitInstant is shifting the blame totally on the host.Never mindthe fact that they used real, publicly accessible information on of the owners wide-open Facebook page, this is totally the host’s fault.

Site5 has since responded since the hack.

Security & Social Engineering

This day and age requires us all to be security-conscious

Bitcointip” is a bot written for reddit through which users can “tip” others by entering a sort of command in a comment reply. Agree with what someone says in your favorite misogynistic subreddit and clicking the little orange up arrow isn’t enough? Tip them for it!

This thing is obnoxious as all Hell for a number of reasons:

Bitcoiners are tightwads.

If one scans through the comment history of the bot, each response includes the amount of the “tip” in Bitcions and in USD. Most of these are fractions of Bitcoins and a pattern quickly becomes apparent: Bitcoiners are just throwing change at one another. This is like the world’s largest street corner, with hundreds of babbling, shouting lunatics spewing nonsense, empty coffee cups at their feet awaiting a “donation.”

Bitcoin tips: pennies

It’s spammy as hell.

Instead of agreeing and possibly discussing things, Bitcoiners can just type “+bitcointip” along with some infinitesimal number and then the bot comes along to reply to them, informing the world that this person did in fact give a handful of pennies to another person in Internet play money. On a good (read: bad) day this can lead to a string of inane comments, making reddit an even worse place to be.

It’s pointless.

Trading cardboard cutouts of coins isn’t so bad as long as it’s kept in the basement of Bitcoin-related forums but Bitcoiners are hiding everywhere, trying to proselytize. Imagine, for a moment, that you read and participated in discussions at reddit (an awful proposition, but bear with me here.) You’re discussing a film or a funny picture or world news and say something others find insightful, funny, or any other number of slashdotesque adjectives. Most people would just upvote you and possibly agree, but Bitcoiners drive-by and spam “+bitciontip” and some penny amount. You don’t have a wallet. You don’t even know about Bitcoin. In an effort to understand what just happened, you read up on it a bit and find yourself staring into the abyss of a raging libertarian Hellscape. Fortunately you can just ignore it. Unfortunately if you do this, they get their “money” back.

They’re trying to spread it.

This is like the curse of Bitcoin. It can’t remain in its niche, it must spread and absolutely everyone in the world must know and be forced to use Bitcoin. There’s already one on twitter, and if they had their way, it would be all over Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Google+ (not really, nobody actually uses g+.)

Bitcoins everywhereYes, clearly. Aside from being tied to Bitcoin.
